Data Collection Reflection

Our Task requirements are:

Week 4

During week 4, we began brainstorming ways to do data collection. Since our selected location, Chongqing, was in another country entirely, we, or at least I, weren't able to physically go there for a real observation study. As such, we had to settle for secondary research and data collection methods such as online research, surveys and case studies or interviews.

We decided on Susan (Zhang Jingyang)'s idea about floating tables, confirmed with our mentor, and then began research soon after. I was responsible for the design of the solution, making 5 different design drawings for the doc.

Week 5

Our group consulted our mentor on our completed document with our information. Our mentor then told us to pivot ideas to a different idea, as our current idea was not functional enough and too decorative. Due to the fact that it was already very close to the deadline and we basically had to redo our entire research, we requested extra time from our mentor, upon which he granted. We went back to our proposal slides and selected a different idea, this time on reusing treated wastewater for farming. We already had a set of slides prepared for the initial idea we had, so we had to do extra research to convert the information and tweak the existing slides. We also didn't have time to schedule an interview with a real expert in the field, so we found an interview online that would be able to be used as an oral artefact. I also did research on case studies we could use as data, since we were severely limited by the fact that we couldn't physically go to Chongqing. In the end, I regret not double confirming our idea with our mentor so that we didn't have to redo all our research last minute. This is the second time we had to completely redo our slides and research now for this project, and I hope it will be the last.
