TASK 1A Physical Collage [10%]

TASK DESCRIPTION: Buy or find a magazine and use the images inside to create a physical collage. Create 3 pre-compositions using the same elements. Pick the best one and glue it down.

Process Work

For this task, I went to POPULAR in The Curve and bought a large magazine book that had many large scale images. When choosing the images to use for the activity, I was really drawn to this large watch on one of the pages. I cut out the watch and cut out the inside except for the watch hands and the middle to hopefully use to frame and isolate another image later on. I also focused on words in the magazine that I could use as a sort of 'theme', eventually landing on the words 'In The Now' and 'Heart to Heart'. From there, I conceptualised a theme of fleeting love, and found images to suit it. My favourite of the images was also the main subject of the composition. It was a photo of a shirtless young man holding a bouquet of flowers and standing on a purple stool. I felt that it fit the theme perfectly and decided to make him the center point.

I did have a bit of difficulty with the compositions at first as I was not keeping in mind the principles of composition and was just going off of gut feeling, but after being instructed by Mr Shamsul a few times, I settled on three compositions that I was happy with.

FINAL COMPOSITION

Because my physical collage was not A4 sized and because of the magazine paper's natural shininess, it was hard for me to successfully capture a photo of the collage. Here are two photos of the same collage, one that was scanned by my printer, and one that I had taken in class that I felt made the collage look the best.
