Task 3: Development & Design [40%]
Week 7- Week 8
1) TASK DESCRIPTION: In this task, students will develop and refine the idea that they have proposed and chosen in Task 2. Based on that idea, students will create a design of their own. They are expected to apply their knowledge of design principles in their idea development and final design. They may use any medium and/or materials, except for full photography, that are suitable to convey their final visual message.

Idea Selection
2) TASK DESCRIPTION: Select one of the 3 ideas you proposed in Task 2
Sketch 1 Sketch 2
Sketch 3
Of the three designs that I produced, I have been instructed to follow through with my third idea. My third idea is a daring composition from the perspective of the lily pad looking up at the bridge.
Development and Refinement
3) TASK DESCRIPTION: Develop and refine it through colour exploration,
composition, typeface, positioning, etc., with design principles in
mind.
I started testing different adjustments to my sketches, such as flipping the canvas for this sketch.
This version of the sketch has white rays with the yellow sun rays,
which I think make the artwork look more bright and blinding. I also
darkened the shadows of the bridge and added white ripple particles in
the water around the lilypads. I do think there are too many white
ripples around the lilypad, so I aim to reduce them, and the additional
shading is also too dark and too red I believe.
Figure 5
For these artworks, I played around with the colours in the background.
I tried adding a darker gray version of the original background, a
turquoise background, red and pink background and yellow background. I
think Figure 3, Figure 4 and Figure 5 are good options. I am considering
combining Figure 3 and Figure 5 by making a darker version of the blue
background just to see what it would look like. Other than that, I may
ultimately use Figure 5 or the original as it makes the light rays of
the sun stand out the most.
Figure 7
Then I moved on to the lily pads. My original sketch for the lily pads was
designed after the shapes of giant lily pads, which look like a plate with
raised sides. After observing lily pad artworks online, I decided against
the plate shape and went with a more generic lily pad shape, even adding
extra small lily pads that were not present in the sketch. I also decided to
start the base colour of the lily pads with dark blue to emphasise the
contrast between the dark blue and the light yellow highlight, making the
lily pads more visually interesting. To achieve the Impressionist art style,
I focused more on the placement of the colours instead of blending them
together, as well as added visible thick dry-brush like strokes, layering
the lights and shadows until they sort of unified into one visible shape. I
also took care in keeping the values of the lily pads balanced by adding
dark maroon for the shadows, and added a light dusty yellow for the lily
pads that were further away to create a sense of distance.
For the water, I focused more on blues so as to break up the overwhelming
greens in the bridge and the lily pads, adding the shadows of the water lily
roots in the water to give a sense of depth. Moving on to the sky, I
basically kept the same colour scheme as the sketch, but with a bit more
green and white in the mix. One major change was the clouds, which I decided
to add in as a potential substitute for the grass in the original sketch. I
ended up liking the clouds more as the grass made the general shape of the
horizon not very obvious. Then, I repainted the sun in the same oil paint
texture and adjusted the light rays to an acceptable degree. Finally, I
decided to add a canvas texture to the background to further relate to 'The
Water Lily Pond'.

Bridge Reflection and Shadow on Lily Pads
Another decision I was contemplating was the addition of the bridge's
reflection in the water. I tested several variations: just the reflection in
the water, the reflection and shadow of the bridge on the lily pads and
water, and no reflection. In the end, I went with no reflection, as I felt
that adding the reflection darkens the whole artwork and takes away
attention from the water lily. It was also not logical to have the
reflection there due to the angle and perspective of the
artwork.
Finalisation
4) TASK DESCRIPTION: Finalise your idea and give it a suitable
title.
5) TASK DESCRIPTION: Create your final design in A4 size, JPEG format in
at least 300dpi pixel size.
6) TASK DESCRIPTION: Upload the design and include a caption
under it. The caption should be written as, Title of design_Your
full name_Task 3.

Rationale
7) TASK DESCRIPTION: Write a 200-word rationale
explaining/defending:
i) the decisions made in your design,
ii) the meaning/purpose of the design
and
iii) the design principles that are employed to
create the design.
For my final artwork, I proceeded with my third sketch idea, refining the
elements and shapes in the artwork into a more realistic, Impressionistic style. I followed Monet's original colour scheme but put more focus on the Japanese bridge and the Water Lily pond.
The purpose of my artwork was to reinterpret Monet's 'The Water Lily Pond' into my own style. I felt that the original painting was too stiff and detached from nature, and decided on a composition that is more dynamic, placing perspective directly within the lily pads and nature, as if the lily pads and the viewer are one and the same. This also draws from my interpretation of Monet's work in my second task by encouraging people to not just capture the moment of fleeting nature, but live in it.
I created balance through the composition of the lily pads, and contrast through the dark bridge and the light sky. I used repetition in the repeated shapes of the lily pads as well, creating rhythm and variety through the differing sizes. The limited palette of greens, blues, and soft yellows allows for harmony between the colours and helps unify the composition, emphasising the serene atmosphere.
Feedback from Lecturer
8) TASK DESCRIPTION: Include the feedback that you received from your
lecturer in the Task 3 blogpost.
Good progress Rui Yen. The timelapse video process is impressive. Your exploration reflects an understanding of the chosen design principle, and you demonstrate consistency in applying it across your work. The visuals support your process well and show your attempt to improve and strengthen the composition. You may proceed to Final Compilation.
